Waste and Biomass Gasification Technology at GSTC 2016 Conference in Vancouver

 Greene Waste to Energy participated at the Gasification and Syngas Technologies Conference in Vancouver, the leading event on gasification technology. This edition of the annual conference focused on emerging markets, and breakthroughs in syngas and methanol production. The event provided all the latest information on global projects and important trends in biomass and waste gasification 


 Elche-based company Greene Waste to Energy, S.L. participated at the annual conference organised by the Gasification and Syngas Technology Council from October 16 to 19. The Council represents the leading 25 companies in the gasification sector. The event was held in Vancouver in Canada and a total of over 250 delegates participated. 

The conference featured presentations on the most important breakthroughs of the last year in the field of gasification of coal, waste and biomass, etc. It also examined projects currently being undertaken in different parts of the world in countries with economies based on low fossil fuel consumption. 

Gasification enables energy recovery from household, industrial and agricultural waste, and even pruning waste from trees. A gasification plant can convert waste into energy in the form of heat or electricity. 

Unlike incineration, Greene gasification technology is an environmentally more sustainable and eco-friendly process. This is because the degradation of the waste is carried out in controlled conditions with very little oxygen consumption (4 times less than in combustion). 


 In gasification, the chemical energy in the organic matter is converted into chemical energy contained within a gas. This gas can be used as fuel to obtain energy in gas engines, turbines or boilers. The ash from the process can be considered a completely stable waste (it does not generate other by-products subsequently). This ash can also be recovered for use as construction materials, fertiliser or in the manufacture of glass. Availing of this ash considerably reduces the volume of waste. 


 The Green gasification process has worldwide patent protection. Every kilo of waste processed provides approximately 1 kilowatt of electricity and 1.5 kilowatts of thermal energy. Why do we continue to throw garbage into landfills and buy fossil fuels (oil and gas) to produce energy. Why do we keep on polluting the planet when there are ways of reducing the carbon footprint of human activity? 

A number of countries where environmental awareness is very strong have long since taken the decision to reduce their dependency on fossil fuels. For example, Finland and Sweden are pioneers in the use of these technologies on a large scale and generate over 20% of their energy from waste and biomass, thereby reducing their carbon footprint. 

Greene is the leader in gasification technology for plants that produce energy on a smaller scale (between 0.5 and 5 MWe), where the technology marketed by competitors is not as competitive. 

Greene is leading innovation in the field of gasification in Europe, thanks to the confidence shown in the company by the European Commission. The Commission is funding the technology we will use in the future, specifically in the area of converting food industry waste into electricity and heat. The project in question is called “Pilot plant for environmentally friendly animal by-products industries (PILOT ABP)”. 

Greene is currently undertaking a number of projects in Croatia, Spain, South America and Asia. The company is now looking at the American market, bearing in mind the great interest expressed by US industry in Green gasification technology at the GSTC2016 conference. 

It is currently almost impossible to work in Spain due to the legislative obstacles imposed by the electricity lobby and the government on the use of renewable energy, in the form of a Royal Decree that penalises self-consumption...the famous “tax on the sun”. Nonetheless, Greene is confident that the free market will finally prevail and favour technologies such as gasification and others, which, along with intelligent consumption and efficient recycling, will help to solve problems such as landfills, currently a headache for many municipalities. 

Greene was born in 2011 as the initiative of four entrepreneurial chemists from Elche. The company now has 20 employees and the backing of a private investor from the Autonomous Community of Valencia. As was confirmed at the recent Vancouver conference, the company is offering the market a mature, efficient, reasonably priced technology that responds to the needs of municipal councils, waste managers, farms and other industries with high energy (heat and electricity) consumption that wish to reduce their dependency on oil and oil-derived products. 

In the development of some of its innovative projects, Greene has enjoyed the financial support of the CDTI (Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology), the IVACE (Valencia Institute for Business Competitiveness) and the European Commission through the Horizon 2020 programme.
